SUMMARY:Free Admission at the Pend Oreille County Historical Society Museum (Newport)
DESCRIPTION:Come see a railroad caboose\, a lookout tower\, multiple log cabins (schoolhouse\, hunters and settlers)\, an icehouse\, a root cellar\, a sawmill\, a Church\, a 1908 Idaho & Washington Northern Railroad Depot and many other buildings (and the grounds)\, all filled with educational displays/artifacts (such as the Kalispel Tribe of Indians\, the railroad\, the riverboats\, the military) of the past days of Pend Oreille County and the surrounding area. The giftshop offers many local history books and other unique items for sale. The research department is open by appointment. \nLocated in the “gem area” of Newport\, the Museum is 100% volunteer-operated and is adjacent to Centennial Plaza\, where the Big Wheel\, a Reynolds Corliss engine and the Greater Newport Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center also resides. Intermittently\, you may see a Port of Pend Oreille\, dba Pend Oreille Valley Railroad (POVA) train pull in. Just across the street is Washington States 2nd oldest tavern and also an ice cream fountain and deli in one of Newport’s oldest historic buildings. \n
