SUMMARY:Fishin' in the 50's Open House at Knappton Cove
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate America250 at\nKnappton Cove Heritage Center\, formerly known as Knappton Cove Camp in the 1950’s.\nThis time of year it’s hard to miss all the fishing activity\, from all the boats in the river to the return of the white pelicans furiously gulping away. Step back in time to 1950 and you would have seen Clarence & Katharine Bell’s fishing campground and moorage here at Knappton Cove. They purchased the ‘retired’ Columbia River Quarantine Station and converted the building to run Knappton Cove Camp. The Salmon Derbies were all the rage and oh\, were those winning catches BIG!! Come see some of the relics of the era\, sip some lemonade\, and enjoy the view.

SUMMARY:Out of Many\, One
DESCRIPTION:Visitors attending Washington Museum Day on August 8 discovered that the Grandview Museum had selected a single newspaper editorial as the artifact that best represents Grandview’s contribution to the 250-year history of the United States. \nAt first glance\, it appeared to be an ordinary page from the Grandview Herald. \nUpon closer examination\, visitors discovered it recorded something much larger than local news. \nIt documented democracy at work. \nThe editorial\, written by Grandview Herald editor/owner Chapin Foster in 1911\, addressed one of the most important decisions facing the young community. Grandview was divided over whether to construct a municipal water system. One group believed the town needed a dependable supply of clean water and was willing to tax itself to build it. Others opposed additional taxes and were satisfied obtaining water from the Yakima River and the Sunnyside Canal\, just as they always had. \nRather than telling readers what to think\, Foster presented both viewpoints carefully and respectfully. He explained the arguments supporting the proposed water system as well as the concerns of those opposed to new taxes. Each position was allowed to speak for itself. \nThen came the editorial’s remarkable conclusion. \nInstead of urging citizens how to vote\, Foster urged them to become voters worthy of a democracy. \nHe encouraged every resident to attend meetings held by both sides\, listen carefully\, study the issues\, become well informed\, and then cast a thoughtful ballot. \nIn that final paragraph\, visitors encountered something larger than a discussion about water. They witnessed one of the First Amendment’s highest purposes—not simply protecting freedom of speech and freedom of the press\, but encouraging an informed citizenry capable of governing itself. \nThe levy passed. \nThe community chose to invest in a municipal water system. \nWells were drilled. \nPumps were installed. \nA water tower rose above Grandview. \nReliable public water became one of the foundations upon which the community continued to grow. \nThe exhibit invited visitors to see the newspaper not merely as an artifact\, but as evidence of a community working through disagreement with civility\, public discussion\, and informed participation. \n“As we considered what single artifact best represented Grandview in America’s 250-year story\,” said Museum Curator Ray Vining\, “we realized the answer was not the machinery that pumped the water or even the water tower itself. Those things were the result. The newspaper editorial captured the process by which ordinary citizens examined a difficult question\, respected differing opinions\, educated themselves\, and chose a path forward together.” \nIn selecting the editorial\, the Grandview Museum sought to remind visitors that the history of the United States is not written only by presidents\, legislatures\, or armies. It is also written in town halls\, newspaper offices\, public meetings\, and polling places\, where neighbors confront problems and\, through informed self-government\, determine the future of their communities. \nThe story told on Washington Museum Day was ultimately not about water. \nIt was about citizenship. \nIt was about the responsibilities that accompany the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment. \nAnd it was about one small Washington town that demonstrated how democracy is strengthened when ordinary people commit themselves to becoming informed\, engaged citizens.

SUMMARY:Washington 250: Making American History in Seattle
DESCRIPTION:Join us to commemorate the first-ever “Day of Remembrance” with Frank Abe and Densho. We will have snacks and refreshments. \nConnected to the Washington state-wide celebration of America’s 250 anniversary\, we have collaborated with Densho on a mini-exhibit for the “Out of Many\, One” initiative. \nThe summertime exhibit features the poster from the first Japanese American Pilgrimage from Seattle to the Puyallup Fairgrounds where many of the participants and their families were incarcerated during World War II and marked the first Day of Remembrance. \nA movement rooted in memory\, join Frank Abe as he shares the important moment it created and stories from the experience. This talk will be paired with an art-making activity for families to honor these histories created within Seattle and we will highlight the installed Densho (Out of Many\, One Display) poster at the library.

SUMMARY:Ridgefield Multicultural Initiative (Out of Many\, One display)
DESCRIPTION:Cathlapotle Plankhouse Photograph \nPhotograph of the Cathlapotle Plankhouse by Raul Moreno. The photo was the winner of the 2017 Friends of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Photo Contest. \n  \nHow it represents the community’s American experience: \nWe chose the America250 theme of “resilience” and the Ridgefield theme of “perseverance\,” as evidenced by this photograph of the contemporary plankhouse\, which stands as a reminder of the thousands of people who lived at Cathlapotle Village for hundreds of years. Built as part of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration\, the structure was modeled on plankhouses excavated by archaeologists at the village site. \n  \nOn display at the Greely Building\, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, August 22\, 23\, 28\, 29\, and September 5\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Forged in Fire Lecture and Demonstration: 19th-Century Innovations
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026\, Forged in Fire at Museum of Glass will combine illustrated lectures\, live glassblowing demonstrations\, and multimedia content to trace the evolution of American glassmaking\, from colonial Jamestown to the contemporary works of Dale Chihuly. Each event illuminates the artistry\, design\, and cultural significance of glass as both a decorative and functional medium. Forged in Fire will reach diverse audiences throughout the Puget Sound region and beyond via in-person events and live streams\, and build community pride in the region’s unique role in the American Studio Glass Movement — a movement co-founded by Tacoma-native Dale Chihuly. By combining history\, artistry\, and live craft\, this program exemplifies how decorative arts can spark curiosity\, fuel discovery\, and create shared cultural experiences. Museum of Glass will host six unique public sessions pairing glass history talks by renowned glass artist and historian Walter Lieberman with live demonstrations by the Museum’s internationally acclaimed Hot Shop Team. Each lecture focuses on a specific period of time in glassmaking history and is accompanied by a demonstration that recreates period-specific objects and techniques\, giving audiences tangible insight into the evolution of glass as a decorative art form.

SUMMARY:The American Experience: Stories of Freedom\, Equality and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The Karshner Museum & Center for Culture & Arts invites the community to the opening of The American Experience: Stories of Freedom\, Equality and Identity exhibit. \nInspired by the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence\, this new exhibit explores the continuing American story through the themes of freedom\, equality\, opportunity\, identity\, and voice. Through artifacts\, photographs\, historical documents\, and interactive experiences\, visitors will discover how people from many backgrounds have contributed to our nation and how their stories continue to shape the American experience. \nThe exhibit examines both the aspirations and the challenges of our history\, highlighting the experiences of individuals and communities whose voices have too often been overlooked. It explores how Americans have expressed their identities\, worked to expand equality and opportunity\, preserved cultural traditions\, and used their voices to inspire change and strengthen their communities. \nRather than presenting history as a completed story\, The American Experience invites visitors to see our nation’s history as an ongoing journey. Each generation has added new perspectives\, expanded the meaning of freedom\, and written another chapter in the American story. \nThe exhibit opening will be held on Saturday\, August 8\, noon – 5pm\, in conjunction with the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. \nThird Saturday programs\, beginning September 19\, along with special festivals\, performances\, storytelling\, music\, art activities\, and conversations\, will each explore a different chapter of the American experience—connecting the stories of the past with the voices and experiences that continue to shape our future. \nThe exhibit will also be on display Tuesday–Thursdays\, 1–4 p.m.\, starting September 8. \nVisitors of all ages are invited to explore\, reflect\, and discover how the American story continues to unfold—and how every voice has the power to become part of its next chapter. \nAdmission is always free.
